40 Percent of Sakonnet Bridge Commuters From Out of State, Says Rep. Edwards

Rep. Jay Edwards, citing statistics from the Department of Transportation, reportedly made the claim on talk radio earlier this month.

If you use the Sakonnet River Bridge on a daily basis, are you driving a vehicle with license plates other than Rhode Island? PolitiFacts' Truth-o-Meter recently deemed a statement made by Rep. Jay Edwards (D-Tiverton, Portsmouth) on talk radio earlier this month that 40 percent of the traffic traveling over the bridge is from out of state as "mostly true." As work crews continue completing a new bridge to span Portsmouth and Tiverton and the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority looks to create revenue by raising or placing tolls on bridges in the region, Edwards and other legislators have voiced opposition to any proposals for tolls.

OMG PD: DUI For A DUI, Sleep on the Beach, Take My Wife

We compile the odd, unusual and ‘oh my gosh’ police items from throughout the region.

Here's a look at the week's most unusual police reports: Woman, attempting to bail out friend charged with DUI, charged with DUI Police charged a South Kingstown woman with DUI when they had to respond to a D'Angelo's sandwich shop minutes after she left the station to bail out her friend, who was also arrested on similar charges hours earlier. Town officials are looking into whether Carnegie Abbey's parking signs violate a previous agreement.

Members of the Portsmouth Town Council are looking into parking restriction signs recently posted at the end of Willow Lane near the public boat ramp.  About five to six signs are posted in a parking lot not far from the public boat ramp at the end of Willow Lane. Two of the signs can be seen in the photo above.  The signs state the area is "private property" and parking is allowed for "members only."  Councilor Judi Staven previously said a prior agreement with Carnegie Abbey called for public parking at this location. One small sign, located at the entrance to Elliot Street, points to "additional boat ramp parking." The street leads to an unpaved, dirt lot.  The Carnegie Tower Development Co. Inc. of King of Prussia, PA, has been …
