Portsmouth Volunteer Selected for Exclusive Leadership Program

The hard work of Tia Scigulinsky of Portsmouth has been noticed by AARP. That's why she's just one of 34 volunteers selected for the rigorous year-long training program.

It's no secret that Tia Scigulinsky of Portsmouth is a tireless volunteer.

She puts in time volunteering for the AARP — one of the largest volunteer organizations in the country with more than 55,000 volunteers.

Many of them have the skills and desire to do more. People like Scigulinsky, who "embodies all the qualities that distinguish a volunteer who contributes tirelessly to improve a community's quality of life as a leader as well as by joining collaborative efforts to improve the wellbeing of people who need assistance and support," said AARP State Director Kathleen Connell.

Getting noticed for her hard work has led to Scigulinsky being selected to participate in AARP's Volunteer Leadership Institute, or VLI.

It's described as a "rigorous and innovated year-long training program" that is designed to "elevate highly skilled and motivated AARP volunteers to the next level of volunteer leadership," according to a release.

She'll join 33 other AARP volunteers from around the country. They'll meet in person and virtually to work on their leadership strengths. They choose one of three "tracks" — advocacy, community outreach or external representation.

“Volunteering for AARP is a big part of my life for many reasons,” Scigulinksy said. “While I do believe that volunteerism is its own reward, it always helps to feel valued and appreciated. This opportunity illustrates the support AARP gives its volunteers and speaks to the strength the organization continues to add to so many important endeavors in our communities. I am looking forward to a great learning experience.”

AARP Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond said “We have an ambitious social change agenda aimed at empowering people 50+ to enjoy the way they live and work today, while reaching their goals for tomorrow” said LeaMond.  ”AARP is able to meet our goals by leveraging the talents, the skills, and the tenacity of our volunteers.”
