Navy To Participate in Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Torch Run This Monday

The run will begin at 9 a.m. at Patriots Park in Portsmouth.

Members of the military will pay tribute to the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. this Monday at the 27th annual torch run and holiday observance. 

The Newport Navalog reports the run will begin at 9 a.m. from , located at the intersection of West Main Road and Route 24.

Participants will run  8.2-miles south, while carrying the torch, down Route 114 as part of a day-long observance of the holiday.

Runners will travel through Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport, before reaching the finish line at the Thompson Middle School, where the Navy Band Northeast’s brass quintet will perform, followed by a special celebration lunch. 

Those requiring transportation from Naval Station Newport should meet at Kay Hall on Coddington Point at 8:15 a.m.

Portsmouth students are also expected to take part in a special Martin Luther King Jr. competition at Thomson Middle School that same morning.
