Earth Day Cleanups This Weekend

Earth Day may not be until next week, but Aquidneck Island is already in the cleaning spirit.

Old Colony & Newport Railway and Boy Scout Troop 3 will lead a group of volunteers along the Newport Railway where they run scenic, narrated train trips. To volunteer, please contact Chuck Flippo ahead of time at 401-871-0828.

9 a.m.

The Off Broadway Neighborhood Association invites you to join their annual Earth Day festivities. Meet at Equality Park at 9 a.m. with tools to mulch Equality Park, or pick up bags & gloves to clean your street. Contact Jack McVicker at 829-1601.

The Point Association will meet at both Battery and Storer Parks at 9 a.m. Once gathered, work groups will blanket the Point, cleaning parks, driftways, beach areas, Hunter Park/railroad track area, and east to Arnold Park at the corner of Cross, Bridge, and Upper Thames. Friends of the Waterfront invites volunteers to join them in the annual Earth Day Clean-up at King Park from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers should meet at the pavilion on King Park at 9 a.m. Contact Jim Perrier at markdatum@verizon.net.

The Newport Run & Chug Club will be cleaning up the downtown area. Volunteers should meet at Panera Bread in Brick Market Place at 9 a.m. To volunteer, contact Jeff Heimiller at 970-391-2761 or at newrunclub@yahoo.com.

10 a.m.

Pruitt Chiropractic & Save the Bay Beach Cleanup 2012 for Earth Day.

Volunteers must be 6 years of age or older to participate at Easton's Beach. Any volunteer under the age of 16 must participate with an adult the entire time. Volunteers must be able to do bending and some heavy lifting. Please dress for the weather. Bring your own water bottle, sun, and bug protection. Sturdy closed-toed shoes are required.

The beach clean-up is great family fun and open to the public.

Pruitt Chiropractic will be giving volunteers a free new patient exam gift certificate ($45 value) transferrable to family & friends.

11:45 a.m.

The Naval Health Clinic will be cleaning up Brenton Point State Park. Volunteers should meet at the Naval Health Clinic New England 1 Riggs Road, Newport at 11:45 a.m. To volunteer, contact Bennie, Command Volunteer Coordinator at Naval Station Newport at 401-841-6840 bennie.mitchell@med.navy.mil.

12 p.m.

Clean Ocean Access will host a coastal cleanup at Baileys Beach to Ledge Road in Newport Rhode Island from noon to 2 p.m. Meet in the turn-around area at the end of Bellevue Avenue. This shoreline includes Sandy Beach and Rocky Shores. Wear sturdy shoes or boots, bring your own gloves, but some will be provided/ Please extend this invite to anyone interested in taking care of the coastline.
