Portsmouth Fireworks Moved to Saturday

Hurricane Arthur has pushed Portsmouth's 4th of July fireworks celebrations to July 5.

The threat of wind and rain — along with high surf and dangerous rip currents — The Escobar Farm tradition of fireworks on the Fourth of July has been pushed back by one day.

The annual fireworks celebration, which is put on by Lou Escobar of the farm thanks in part to donations collected throughout the year, lights up the sky over Portsmouth every year and the decision to postpone was made in the hopes of avoiding a soggy letdown.

Aside from the date change, everything else will remain as planned.

There will be a partial to full road closure starting at 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Middle Road due to the display.

The full closure will begin at the corner of Middle Road at Hedly Street and proceed south until Stubtoe Lane.

The show starts after dark and hundreds gather at Escobar's Farm at 133 Middle Road to watch the show, which is both a celebration of our nation's independence as well as an annual community gathering tradition.

Many enjoy the show because of it's rural, community feel. It also is an opportunity to explore the farm.

People are asked to be courteous and consider finding a different vantage spot if Middle Road is clogged with cars. The area must remain clear for first responders. Though many head to the farm itself to see the show, there are many vantage points throughout Portsmouth to catch the action.

If you know of a good viewing spot, post it in the comments. (Please don't post private property locations without permission).

Donations are expected — and encouraged — since the show does not receive formal town or state funding and is run entirely through donations and volunteers. And the kindness of Mr. Escobar's heart.

Show begins around 9:30 p.m.
