On Sunday, Nov. 11, runners and walkers will get the rare opportunity to cross the Newport Pell Bridge right at the break of dawn during the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority’s Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run, sponsored by Newport Hospital.
Thousands of athletes and walking enthusiasts are expected to turn out for the unparalleled scenic panoramas visible from the bridge deck. The four-mile run will begin at 6:30 a.m. in Jamestown, next to the RITBA headquarters. At the gun, runners will head over the Newport Pell Bridge and wind through downtown Newport to the finish line at the Gateway Center on America’s Cup Avenue.
“The bridge is a gorgeous structure, and the opportunity to participate in a crossing like this is rare, so I encourage anyone interested to sign up and take advantage of this,” said David Darlington, chairman of RITBA. “All proceeds from the race will go to Rhode Island non-profit organizations to show our support for their invaluable contributions to the community.”
“Citizens Bank is proud to partner with the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority to bring a unique, innovative experience to runners all over New England,” said Ned Handy, president, Citizens Bank, Rhode Island and Connecticut. “The race will benefit several of our community partners and have an impact long after the last runner has crossed the finish line.”
The title sponsor of the race is Citizens Bank, and Newport Hospital is one of the principal sponsors. Proceeds will benefit several not-for-profit organizations including YMCA of Newport County, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center of Newport, Special Olympics of Rhode Island, Meeting Street, Rhode Island Sports Council, and March of Dimes Rhode Island.
