Newport Gulls Ranked 11th Best Team in Summer College Baseball

The Gulls ranked #11 by Perfect Game USA.

The Newport Gulls were ranked 11th overall in the latest edition of Perfect Game USA’s Summer College Baseball rankings, which was released on July 2.

Newport is 16-5 overall this season and have won eight of their last 10 games. The Gulls are an NECBL-best 9-1 at home in the friendly confines of historic Cardines Field.

The Keene Swamp Bats (5th overall) are the highest ranked New England Collegiate Baseball League team and the only other NECBL team besides Newport in Perfect Game USA’s Top 30. The Swamp Bats are 18-4 overall this season and have won nine of their last 10 games.

The Cape Cod Baseball League’s Harwich Mariners remained the nation’s top-ranked summer-league team for the third week in a row. The Cape Cod Baseball League leads all summer leagues with six teams ranked in the Top 30.   

Teams are ranked on the following criteria: won-loss record, league dominance, depth and quality of professional-level talent and the overall strength of the league. To receive consideration, teams must have at least a .500 record overall.

Newport will be back in action taking on the North Adams SteepleCats on the road on Saturday, July 7. John Hochstatter (1-0, 5.40 ERA) will make his second start of the season for the Gulls.
