Schoonover a Finalist for Mass. Superintendent Job

Portsmouth's assistant superintendent could be picked for the top job in nearby Somerset.

Jeffrey Schoonover, assistant superintendent of schools in Portsmouth, is a finalist for the superintendent job in Somerset, Mass.

Southcoasttoday.com reported that Schoonover, a Somerset resident, is one of three finalists for the job.

Schoonover has been serving in Portsmouth since 2012 and was acting superintendent for two months before the current superintendent was appointed by the School Committee and before that, was chairperson of the science department at Portsmouth High School from 2001 to 2012.

He received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2009, which gave him a chance to meet President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C.

Interviews for the job are scheduled for May 15 and the final decision in Somerset is expected by May 29.
