Portsmouth School Superintendent Resigns

Portsmouth School Superintendent has resigned less than a month before the start of a new school year.

Portsmouth School Superintendent Lynn Krizic has resigned, according to a statement released by the school district Thursday.

"The Portsmouth School Committee has accepted the resignation of Superintendent of Schools Lynn Krizic effective today, July 31 to resign her position as Superintendent of Schools effective today," wrote School Committee Chairman David Croston in a statement. "She has agreed to be available to the district as needed to support the transition in leadership of the Portsmouth School Department."

Krizic requested a 30-day leave of absence this past June due to personal, family reasons.

"We extend our best wishes to her and her family and thank her for her service to the town of Portsmouth," he wrote.

Krizic's time in the Portsmouth School District was not void of controversy since she began in the summer of 2011.

The superintendent made headlines in the last couple of years after the creation of a controversial school district logo, as well as failing to register her vehicle in the state of Rhode Island within the required time period.

Croston praised Krizic for her work in the district. A temporary replacement will take over for Krizic at the start of the new school year, which will begin in only a few weeks.

"Lynn set high goals for the Portsmouth School District, administrators, teachers, staff, and students; goals we will continue to strive to reach as we begin this new school year," he wrote.

"Jeffrey Schoonover, our newly appointed assistant superintendent, will direct the district as acting superintendent in the near term.  Jeff has been ably leading the Ddstrict in Lynn’s absence this past month.

"The Portsmouth School Committee plans to appoint an interim-superintendent in the next 90 days for the balance of the 2013-2014 school year and will begin a formal search for our next superintendent later this fall."
