Is reducing Bristol Ferry Road down to one lane a good idea? The state tends to think so.

The State Traffic Commission is recommending Bristol Ferry Road be reduced to one lane in each direction, reports The Portsmouth Times

The STC is recommending a "road diet" on Bristol Ferry Road from Turnpike Avenue to Boyd’s Lane, just before the Mount Hope Bridge.

Bristol Ferry Road has seen many motor vehicle crashes this past year, including two fatalities.

Do you think reducing Bristol Ferry Road down to one lane would reduce the amount of motor vehicle accidents? Tell us in the comment section below.

Most of the craahes have been head on when someone crosses the center line. Unless they put a median barrier in place reducing the road to one lane in each direction it would not stop cars crossing the center line. This is the states answer to everything one lane each way and lots of roundabouts. This is not being done foe safty it is being done so they can add a dedacted bike lane. this is all part of the Aquidneck Island bike path that starts in Tiverton and will run to Newport. http://www.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/content/20130716-design-study-funds-are-approved-for-aquidneck-island-bike-path.ece

I for one am all for making Bristol Ferry Rd one lane in each direction. This road is a total hazard, not only for vehicles, but for pedestrians. Have you ever tried walking along this road? Cars are so close to the sidewalk that it feels like you are going to be hit. And never mind that no one goes the speed limit. I drive this road every day and outside of not being able to get out of my street, I try to stay the speed limit of 35 and everyone is passing me and giving me looks like I shouldn't be on the road. The median speed is about 45-50 and it doesn't seem like the town will do anything about it. Reducing it to one lane will allow for safer travel and walking.
