Sakonnet River Bridge Tolls To Start Aug. 19

Get your E-ZPass ready. Tolls begin on Aug. 19.

If you drove over the Sakonnet River Bridge this week, you likely saw the electronic sign tucked on the roadside - "Tolls Start Aug. 19."

Toll collection will begin on Aug. 19 on the new Sakonnet River Bridge.

The General Assembly previously approved new legislation to impose a 10-cent toll on the bridge, which spans Portsmouth and Tiverton.

The new legislation prohibits the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority from charging more than 10 cents per vehicle until April 1, 2014. The 10-cent cap will apply to both in-state and out-of-state vehicles.

The RITBA previously stated they are unsure how they will charge for violators who do not pay the 10-cent toll since the cost of postage exceeds the toll.

RITBA Chairman David Darlington said they might not even send bills to those who only violate a few times.
