RITBA To Drivers Without E-ZPass: Expect a Bill

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority has established a new policy to collect its 10-cent toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge.

Drivers traveling over the new Sakonnet River Bridge without an E-ZPass might find something new in their mailbox soon - a bill.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority voted Wednesday to create a new policy to collect its 10-cent toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge, reports WJAR-TV .

However, the new policy will apply only to those who travel over the bridge more than 25 times, according to WJAR-TV.

RITBA previously stated they would relay on the "honor system" to collect the 10-cent toll.

At the end of the last legislative session, lawmakers made an eleventh hour vote to impose a 10-cent toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge. Tolls were previously only collected on the Newport "Pell" Bridge.

The 10-cent toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge, which spans Portsmouth and Tiverton, began on Aug. 19.

Prior to the toll, many residents stated they would remove their E-ZPass transponder from their vehicles if the toll went into effect.
