Portsmouth's Medical Marijuana Center to Open in May; PCC Opposes Call

Seth Bock, a Middletown acupuncturist, talks with Jim Hummel about the Greenleaf Compassion Center, the second medical marijuana center to open in state.

After struggling for years with state approvals and federal regulations, the Greenleaf Compassion Center, Rhode Island's second medical marijuana center, is expected to open next month.

The Greenleaf Compassion Center previously planned to open its distribution center at 200 Highpoint Ave., Unit B-6. Seth Bock, who owns and operates the Newport Acupuncture and Wellness Spa in Middletown, later decided to move the center to 1637 West Main Road.

Jim Hummel recently sat down with Bock and spoke about the center's opening. The center's owners are investing heavily in security for the space on West Main Road.

Meanwhile, members of the Portsmouth Concerned Citizens group say the decision to open a medical marijuana center was a state decision. The group's president says he opposes the use of marijuana in "any form."

What do you think about the opening of a medical marijuana center in Portsmouth? Tell us in the comment section below!

It amazes me that there was a big to do about Target coming to town but a drug dealer is ok. I'm happy to se that the PCC is taking a stand. Does Portsmouth want to be known as the drugie town with drug problems? This is going to hurt our housing market. This is a bad move.

That location is awful. No parking whatsoever. Going to be huge problems if there is no 24-hour armed security on site. That place will be robbed immediately. Wake up Portsmouth.

we've gone round on this before so I won't comment on your drug dealer characterization but exactly what stand did the PCC take which makes you "happy"? The article says the PCC called the opening a "state decision" which is a simple statement of fact, not a "position" and that the President of the PCC (Mr. Fitzmorris?) said HE opposes use of marijuana in any form. It seems from the article that despite their president's personal feelings the PCC as a group is staying out of it and not taking a position. Can someone from the PCC clarify if they have polled their members and determined the majority are opposed to it?

It never ceases to amaze me how little information East side has. This is a done deal. PCC cane complain to anyone they want. Too little too late. Concerned: how many times has CVS been robbed? There is no 24 hour security there. There is a security plan in place, it has been discussed with the local police and approved through the MM lic process. You are the one that needs to wake up.

I find the people that want drug dealers I town must like the drugs. I think the PCC just commenting on their position is a stand in itself. I'm confused how others could be confused this is a stand of position. Possibly those that smoke this stuff need a picture or great detailed write up to explain.

Just how much traffic do you expect at this site?? It will be just like any liquor store in town as far as foot traffic. It's not ever going to be like Walmart on the first of the month,, Think more of a Starbucks.
Paul Hurteau April 25, 2013 at 11:19 PM
What about the drugs alcohol and tobacco,, should they be banned as well???
East side April 25, 2013 at 11:31 PM
No, alcohol and tobacco is ok as these are regulated.
Paul Hurteau April 25, 2013 at 11:49 PM
DUH,,, That's what is happening here, so why are you against this?
East side April 25, 2013 at 11:55 PM
The pot is not regulated as alcohol and tobacco are regulated. There is regulation on the point of purchase but not on the actual pot. Where did the pot come from, what chemical compounds are in the pot? There is not oversight in the chemical compound so there is no oversight on the method to manufacture. This is dangerous. Allowing a quasi-legal drug dealer to set up shop is bad for Portsmouth. The people that live in the area of the drug dealer may see their home prices drop. Portsmouth reputation in general may see a decline because of this.

That will all fall into place just like alcohol did.as far as where it came from etc. , Just like alcohol. As far as property prices,, how many people do you know who grow their own tomatoes?? Same thing, MOST people go to the store for convenience. You are not going to see fields of Marijuana in your neighborhoods. Growing Marijuana is not as easy as most would think. How many people do you know who grow their own tobacco or brew their on beer??

Just because the dumb state of Rhode Island passed a medical marijuana law, it is still ILLEGAL, federally. I just pray the feds are standing outside this place, ready to pounce. and, hello, these toked up drivers will be up and down West Main Road. How much of this stuff will be sold on the streets?

No more than is being sold on the streets now. While I admit RI is a dumb state, (after all Bobby O resides here) I would not be so bold as to dispute the overwhelming numbers of MD's who say this has a direct benefit to certain types of patients. Are you? You can not use MM and drive. That has not changed. So take your hysteria and stuff it.

....speaking of grass......does the DOT need to borrow some mowers and weed-whackers (no puns intended here). The median near the post office (and other areas in town) are ridiculous! The grass is 4-5 feet high (sorry, no pun here either). Anyway, really....it's pretty embarrassing actually. Wonder when it'll get cut? Just sayin'.
