Portsmouth Advertises for Chief of Police

The town of Portsmouth posted an advertisement Wednesday for a new police chief for the Portsmouth Police Department.

Portsmouth is seeking to hire a new police chief, according to a job posting on the town's website. 

The town of Portsmouth posted an advertisement Wednesday for a new police chief for the Portsmouth Police Department. 

Major Jeffrey Furtado, who previously retired as deputy chief of police, has been serving temporarily as interim chief since the retirement of Lance E. Hebert. "He is retired," said Town Administrator John Klimm. "He came back on a temporary basis." 

According to the job posting, the ideal candidate should have a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred, in relevant field, and 15 years of progressively responsible police experience.

The applicant should also hold at least five years of command experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The new police chief will be required to live or relocate to a residence within a negotiated amount of commuting time.

The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 1.
