McKendall Explains Late Campaign Finance Filing

Tina McKendall, Republican candidate for State Senate District 36, missed the deadline to file her campaign finance reports.

The Oct. 9 filing deadline for Rhode Island political candidates to submit their pre-election campaign finance reports came and went with only one missing report from North Kingstown. , was the lone North Kingstown candidate who failed to file her reports (disclosing campaign contributions and spending) by the deadline.

McKendall's opponent, incumbent Sen. James Sheehan, issued a press release the following week calling on McKendall to release the information.

"Disclosure of a candidate's donors is an essential part of transparency and accountability in government," said Sheehan. "The public has the right to know who is supporting Mrs. McKendall's campaign, especially as a new candidate, in order to help them make informed decisions at election time. All candidates must respect the right of voters' right to know."

McKendall, who filed her report this week with the Secretary of State's office, said the late filing wasn't an effort to hide her campaign information. According to McKendall, she and her staff misread the deadline information. McKendall found out she had missed the deadline when a local newspaper, the NorthEast Independent, called her to inquire about the late reports.

"I guess it's a rookie mistake, but I'll never make that mistake again," said McKendall. "The buck stops with me and it was my responsibility."

Robert - did you actually read my post? My issue is not at all what you said - I understand that people can make mistakes on their filings and can file late, especially newcomers with absolutely no political experience whatsoever...my issue is truly that she was so blatantly and deliberating dishonest about it and claimed they were in when she knew full well that she never turned them in, that one has to question her integrity and what else she has said that isn't true, but then again, not all voters or people running for office care about honesty as much as some...

that should read..."blatantly and deliberately dishonest..."

Hmmmm...Ms. McKendall loves to tell people that she is a parishoner at St. Francis de Sales in NK. Perhaps she missed the mass where Fr. Bert gave a homily on the 9th commandment

It reflects poorly on the veteran politician Sheehan to make a big deal about his opponent's mistake. She obviously thought she had filed what was due. Sheehan's ploy was successful, he's gotten at least a couple of people to call his challenger a liar. When you are an incumbent and have no record, call the challenger names to deflect from your own failures.
