Bridge Authority Tables Vote on Proposed Toll Increases

The RITBA board of directors are expected to vote on raising tolls at the Newport Pell Bridge and setting toll rates for the Mount Hope Bridge.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority board of directors met this morning for its monthly board meeting.

The board voted unanimously to table the discussion on new toll rates for the Newport Pell Bridge, which would raise rates to $5 for cash and un-discounted E-ZPass drivers and $1 for Rhode Island E-ZPass drivers, and its request to the Rhode Island General Assembly to allow RITBA to set , until its next meeting on Feb. 8.

As a Jamestowner, I would like to see at least an exclusion for us, unless Newport wants us to take our business to the West Bay area. I feel more oriented to Newport, I would hate to have to change that. As it is, we are spending at least $3.52 a day crossing that bridge. That's $1,284.80 a year! Isn't that enough? Sure, raise the rates for the occasional visitor, that won't hurt, but locals should get a break. SMR

The people of bristol and Portsmouth need to pay their fair share. Why should they get a free ride while the Newport bridge tolls take a toll on the main attraction of the island. Charge them so the disbursement will be more even.

Keep raising the bridge prices and soon you shall see a decrease of people coming into Newport. Also if you are coming into Newport make sure your car has good shocks because the main roads like Broadway,Thames St,Spring St and Bellevue Ave have bad bumpy roads which have not been maintained for many, many years.

Why are there no tolls on bridges in any other part of the State? Aquidneck Island is the wallet for Providence and the rest of the State. It's BS.

I have heard that there must be at least one way to drive off the island without paying a toll. If this is true doesn't it make more sense to put a toll on the Sakonnet Bridge which is much more heavily traveled than the Mount Hope Bridge?
