Court Agrees To Deny Weddings At Portsmouth Vineyard

A Superior Court judge has agreed to not allow weddings at one vineyard due to the town's zoning code.

If you planned on toasting your newly-made nuptials at one Portsmouth vineyard, you should start searching for a new venue.

A Newport Superior Court judge recently ruled in favor of the local zoning board's decision, reports The Sakonnet Times. The judge agreed with the zoning board to not allow Greenvale Vineyards permission to host weddings and other ceremonies on the Portsmouth property.

The Portsmouth Zoning Board previously ruled the request to host weddings was not one of the allowed uses under the town's "special use permit."

What do you think about the judge's decision? Should Greenvale Vineyards be allowed to host weddings and other receptions?

What a shame for businesses to suffer over such a petty zoning board.

Portsmouth for 43 years and counting September 21, 2012 at 03:14 PM
Yes, because afterall, it might cut into the profits Portsmouth makes, from the rental of Glen Manor House. Give me a break. Greenvale is private property, a beautiful setting and they certainly have the room. What's the harm? Is it the neighbors? If so, work out a no later than 9:00pm schedule, so there's no excessive late noise OR how about only acoustic music? We need to accommodate local businesses to thrive, so we can rake in their tax money! C'mon Portsmouth!

why is this a zoning question? you should be able to get married wherever you want. Motel 6, the Beach, the Beachhouse, Escobar Corn Maze.... what am I missing?

Greenvale is such a beautiful venue, so many couples will be saddened by the news. Hopefully some folks can get together and fight this. Competition from Glen Manor is what I suspect; not fair!!!

You would be wrong about that. This was a zoning issue. The neighbors made a complaint and the zoning board followed the laws.

They tried for a varience and lost, that is why this was in court.
