Canario named Deputy Majority Leader

Portsmouth, Tiverton and Little Compton rep tapped for leadership role on new Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello's leadership team.

Rep. Dennis M. Canario has been appointed Deputy Majority Leader in the Rhode Island House of Representatives.

Canario, (D-Dist. 71, Portsmouth, Little Compton, Tiverton) was picked by new Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello for the post, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

As a Deputy Majority Leader, Canario is a member of the House leadership team and "will work closely with the Majority Leader and Senior Deputy Majority Leader to ensure that party members are properly informed on measures and votes coming before the body," a State House press office release stated.

Along with that post, Canario has been named the Secretary of the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare and will remain a member of the House Judiciary Committee.

This is Canario's first term in the House. He is a retired police officer and former Portsmouth Town Council member. He served six years on the council, two as president.
