Butts Hill Fort Plan on Council Docket

Built by American troops in 1776, it is an historic spot in American history, marking the center of the American line during the Battle of Rhode Island.

The largest Revolutionary War earthwork in southeastern New England is right here in Portsmouth at the top of Butts Hill.

Built by American troops in 1776, it is an historic spot in American history, marking the center of the American line during the Battle of Rhode Island.

Today, the fort is overgrown and unloved and a group of volunteers, marine archeologists, historians and others have a grand vision for the site that would turn this important but neglected site into an historic landmark, educational site and possible museum.

"As the largest Revolutionary War fortification in Rhode Island, and as part of a National Historic Landmark property, it is vital that the public understand its historic significance and have the opportunity to enjoy it in a safe and meaningful way," according to a recently-released report by the Rhode Island Marine Archeology Project.

The report (attached to this article, click "download .PDF" to grab it,) will be discussed by the Town Council tonight.

The plan might include adding walking trails, improving signage, identifying and stabilizing areas of the earthwork remnants that need support and developing facilities to support educational and recreational opportunities at the site.
