Portsmouth police remained on Union Street overnight Friday into Saturday after a woman barricaded herself in her home with a firearm.
The situation began around 2 p.m. Friday, when police first closed Union Street off to traffic. A half-mile stretch of Union Street from Botanica, the former Potting Shed, to Jepson Lane remains closed Saturday morning.
Police are in talks with a woman inside a home on Union Street. Police remained at the home overnight in an attempt to have her surrender.
"The situation on Union Street in Portsmouth remains status quo. Officers from the Rhode Island State Police and the Portsmouth Police have remained on scene throughout the overnight, attempting negotiations with a distraught female in possession of a weapon," said Portsmouth Deputy Chief Brian Peters in a press release issued Saturday morning.
Police would not comment as to the type of firearm. "The area is contained and isolated at this time," Peters said.
No one else is inside the home at this time, according to the deputy chief.
A "handful of homes" have been evacuated, as residents were asked to voluntarily leave their homes. The State Police tactical team is on scene.
