Newport Dinner Train Strikes Vehicle in Portsmouth

The train pushed the vehicle down the tracks 20 feet. No injuries were reported.

A Bristol man is lucky to be alive this week after a train struck his vehicle last Saturday in Portsmouth.

A 2012 Dodge Ram, operated by Marc Proulx of Bristol, was turning into the Carr Point Recreation Area off Burma Road on Oct. 27, when the vehicle was struck on its passenger side by an oncoming train.

The Newport Dinner Train was traveling south on the tracks adjacent to Burma Road at the time. The train pushed the Dodge Ram down the railroad tracks 20 feet before coming to a stop.

The driver, Proulx, was uninjured, according to Portsmouth police.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage as a result. A passenger side car on the train also sustained damage.

It is unknown if there is a railroad crossing with lights at this section. Signs about a railroad crossing are posted, according to police.

Carr Point is the recreational area for Naval Station Newport.

unless this vehicle broke down on the tracks, how on earth could this man not be able to move in time from a train traveling 7-15 mi per hr?? and what now? he makes an insurance claim for stupidity??

As a 15 year employee of both rail lines, and knowing the schedule of these trains, I can say with certainty that that section of track is traveled by all deadheading trains (trains without any passengers) at between 12-15 mph to keep to the schedule. The simple fact is that he turned off of Burma road knowing that the train was coming, and tried to beat it.

Don't take the chance of these trains going slower than they actually are. It's not a risk worth taking. At over 400 tons, if you miscalculate, the consequences could be deadly.

Stop, Look, Listen. I learned this lesson years ago in Drivers Ed class. Burma Road is a nice, quiet stretch on the Portsmouth waterfront. Folks who drive this road are not in a hurry...that's for East Main/West Main Rd. Marc is lucky to be alive for his carelessness.

Is this the same location with the Trails of Terror? That would be paranormal
