UPDATED: Rescue Crews Use Jaws of Life to Save Newport Man

A Newport man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital early Friday.

The Newport man, involved in a vehicle crash in Portsmouth, was listed in "fair" medical condition as 5 p.m. Friday, said a Rhode Island Hospital spokesperson. 

 crews were called to the Mount Hope Bridge Friday for a report of a single, motor vehicle crash.

A car struck a utility pole at the intersection of Bristol Ferry Road and the Mount Hope Bridge around 1:20 a.m. 

When crews arrived, they found a 22-year-old Newport man trapped in his vehicle.

Crews used hydraulic tools, the Jaws of Life, to reach the man. After 25 minutes, the victim was freed from the vehicle, according to the department's spokesman, Capt. Michael O'Brien. 

Due to "significant injuries," the man was transported by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.
