Two Arrested After Car Does 'Doughnuts,' Rolls Over At Playground

The following arrest information was supplied by the Portsmouth Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Two men were arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly lying about a rollover car crash on Anthony Road. No injuries were reported.

were called to Anthony Road near the Common Fence Point Playground. A vehicle had apparently rolled over near the playground around 1:30 a.m. Witnesses told police they saw two men leave the scene of the crash.

An investigation led police to 25-year-old  of 87 Dighton Ave., who had been given the vehicle to operate, police said.

Officers went to Sanford's house to check on his well-being and the other man's condition after the crash. However, when officers arrived, Sanford allegedly began to act disorderly.

"Upon arrival, Sanford was upset at the officers' presence," said Lt. Brian Peters.

Sanford allegedly struck an officer in the chest with his hand. He then allegedly continued to resist arrest while being placed into handcuffs, police said. Sanford allegedly began to yell and swear at the officers.

Sanford was charged with simple assault, obstruction of an officer in the execution of duty, resisting arrest, vandalism and disorderly conduct.

Police also arrested 21-year-old Matthew Botelho of 97 Massasoit Ave. Botelho was charged with obstruction of an officer in the execution of duty.

Police say Botelho denied any involvement in the crash at first, stating he was in Tiverton at the time. Botelho later admitted to being the passenger, police said.

The investigation later revealed the vehicle did "doughnuts" in the park area before it rolled over, police said.

Both men were held overnight at the police station.

At this point I am absolutely disgusted by the Portsmouth Pd. I find it interesting that the cops supposedly showed up to check the well-being of the people involved yet let themselves into the house saying they had probable cause. The police were the ones who escalated the situation by letting themselves into the house without a warrant. Interesting enough, all of the charges imposed were related to events that took place after the police took it upon themselves to enter a home with no good reason. To check on the well-being, huh? Seems like the Portsmouth police needs to get their stories straight.

I'd like to point out that Portsmouth Patch gives users the opportunitiy to comment on articles and posts. With that said, the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution enables us to do such things by giving us the freedom of speech. Thus, I think it is unnecessary to delete posts that do no harm to others and just share a side of the story that people cannot see from this article. So i will exercise my freedom of speech yet again. At this point I am absolutely disgusted by the Porstmouth PD. I find it interesting that the cops supposedly showed up to check the well-being of the people involved in the described incident above, yet let themselves into the house saying they had probable cause. The police escalated the situation by letting themselves into the house without a warrant, something that should not be done unless they have sufficient evidence and intend to make an arrest. Yet from this article, it seems that their intent when they showed up at the house was not to make an arrest, but to simply check on the condition of the people involved in the alleged car rolling. Interesting enough, all of the charges imposed were related to the events that took place after the police took it upon themselves to enter a home with no good reason.

Was it really a donut or more of a ribbon donut? Another note, this behavior was performed by two Salve Admins however, they both got off. Wrong town, wrong time, wrong neighborhood.

Well this person inparticular seems to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time??? and I think that the neighbors and VICTIMS of this behavior should not have to suffer any longer.

Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What about the tax payers who have to wake up in the morning without their change in their car. ALL OF THE NEIGHBORS HAVE BEEN ROBBED BY MARC SANFORD, AND HIS PARENTS ARE ENABLERS TO ALLOW A 25-YEAR-OLD MAN AND HIS CRONIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS ACTIVITY IT'S INSANITY.

SEEMS LIKE THE PORTSMOUTH POLICE DID THEIR JOB!!! MARC SANFORD NEEDS HELP. AND PROBABLE CAUSE, BLAH BLAH BLAH, GET A LAWYER AND FIGHT IT THEN!!! THEIR WERE PLENTY OF WITNESSES THAT EVENING AS THERE ALWAYS IS IN A MARC SANFORD EVENT.....................................I LIVE ON CANTON AVE AND WAS AWOKEN TO THE DRAMA AS USUAL....NEVERMIND THE SUMMER TIME DRUG ESCAPADES COME ON PEOPLE...
nicholas martel April 21, 2012 at 11:16 PM
I THINK THAT PEOPLE SHOULD STOP ENABLING MR. SANFORD. HE IS A MENACE TO THE FAMILIES AND CHILDREN IN COMMON FENCE POINT. HE IS A CONVICTED THIEF, DRUG ADDICT, AND HAS APPARENT PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES. HIS PARENTS BLATENT ALLOWANCE OF HIS BEHAVIOR AND IGNORANCE TOWARD THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS' WELL BEING IS INSULTING AND RUDE. WHEN WILL ANOTHER INNOCENT PERSON GET HURT. HOW WOULD THE SANFORDS LIKE IT IF IT WERE THE OTHER WAY AROUND?

As someone who has known Marc and his family for 15 years I must speak up and say that this is a kid who yes has been in trouble as do many teenagers. I have watched this kid fight to become a better person but he will never get a break in this town. The Portsmouth Police did not show up to his house to "check on his well being" they went to his house specifically to once again do whatever they can to drag this kid back into the gutter. As far as his parents are concerned they have done whatever they can for the well being of THEIR child. Marc has always been polite and kind to me since I have known him and I have had front row seats to the Portsmouth Police and their brutality at this kids expense. Mr. Sanford should move out of this town because he will never see a moments peace until he does. The Portsmouth Police Dept should be ashamed of themselves!

oh please! quit making excuses for him! I can ramble off all of the incidents that he has been a part of in recent yrs, but I'd rather be brief and enjoy my morning coffee. They are NOT typical "teenager behavior". AND, he is 25! he has NOT been a teenager for quite a while, yet look at his record! Did you ever think that the PPD is helping to protect the innocent? I would be more than happy to help Mr. Sanford pack his bags!!

anonymous – So there’s a vehicle rolled over. If you saw that wouldn’t you reasonable think that it’s ‘possible’ the driver/occupants of the vehicle might be injured? If the police DIDN’T enter the house and check on him you’d be complaining that they would have left him there to die. Why didn’t anyone answer the door anyway? And you know…when you hit/bump/touch a cop you’re just asking to be handcuffed regardless of the circumstances. It’s ALWAYS been that way. And you say that you have witnessed Marc Sanford “…fight to become a better person…” At age 25, this kind of activity doesn’t make it appear that he’s trying to better himself. You’ve known him since he was a teenager. How long are you going to be one of his enablers?
