UPDATED: Tiverton Man Dies During Struggle; State Police Investigating

State Police and the Attorney General's Office are investigating the death of a Tiverton man on Friday.

Updated at 3:56 p.m. Tuesday. A previous version incorrectly stated Craig Raposa was a Portsmouth resident. While he was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Portsmouth native, he resided in Tiverton.

State Police are now investigating the death of a Tiverton man, who died while being transported by ambulance Friday afternoon.

Craig Raposa, 25, of Tiverton, died Friday of unknown causes while being transported by Portsmouth Rescue to a nearby hospital.

"There was a death of an individual. As a result of that, the investigation into that is continuing," said Lt. Col. Raymond Studley of the State Police.

According to Studley, was called to the  complex on West Main Road around noon. Police and Rescue personnel were at the apartment complex at the same time.

Portsmouth police were in the process of detaining Raposa.

"He was being taken into custody," Studley said. "He was in handcuffs. I don't know if there were any charges."

On Monday, Studley said he could not comment on charges or the circumstances involving the incident. "Once our investigation is complete, the case will go to the Attorney General's Office," he said.

The Providence Journal reports Raposa became involved in a struggle with police, during which, officers reportedly used pepper spray

The Office of the State Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The victim's family has been notified, Studley said.

State Police are currently assisting in the investigation with the Attorney General's Office. All questions asked at the are being directed to State Police at this time.

Portsmouth Patch will continue to follow this story as it develops.

Dear A great family town, What does "lose sight of the bottom line" mean. Are those code words for...a 25 year old young man...Craig Raposa...their nephew? You conclude he was "taken so soon"... dead... because..."God has special plans for him in his world"...Did you really beleive that?... Your lack of true empathy and understanding of the loss of Criag to his family is mind- boggling...Sometimes it is better to say nothing...You may want to turn to God for that wisdom and enlightenment.

I believe you should take your own advice if you took my words that way. I was apologizing for our words and yes I do look to the Lord for answers when these things happen. You should be ashamed of your response.
