UPDATED: Tiverton Man Dies During Struggle; State Police Investigating

State Police and the Attorney General's Office are investigating the death of a Tiverton man on Friday.

Updated at 3:56 p.m. Tuesday. A previous version incorrectly stated Craig Raposa was a Portsmouth resident. While he was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Portsmouth native, he resided in Tiverton. 

State Police are now investigating the death of a Tiverton man, who died while being transported by ambulance Friday afternoon. 

Craig Raposa, 25, of Tiverton, died Friday of unknown causes while being transported by Portsmouth Rescue to a nearby hospital.

"There was a death of an individual. As a result of that, the investigation into that is continuing," said Lt. Col. Raymond Studley of the State Police. 

According to Studley, was called to the  complex on West Main Road around noon. Police and Rescue personnel were at the apartment complex at the same time.

Portsmouth police were in the process of detaining Raposa. 

"He was being taken into custody," Studley said. "He was in handcuffs. I don't know if there were any charges." 

On Monday, Studley said he could not comment on charges or the circumstances involving the incident. "Once our investigation is complete, the case will go to the Attorney General's Office," he said. 

The Providence Journal reports Raposa became involved in a struggle with police, during which, officers reportedly used pepper spray

The Office of the State Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The victim's family has been notified, Studley said. 

State Police are currently assisting in the investigation with the Attorney General's Office. All questions asked at the are being directed to State Police at this time.
