Portsmouth Firefighters Assist at Fatal Crash in Tiverton

An unidentified driver died early Tuesday after a fatal, single car crash at 1:30 a.m. along Stafford Road in Tiverton.

Tiverton Fire Chief Robert Lloyd says the single vehicle, with two individuals inside, struck a telephone utility pole before stopping in a wooded area off Stafford Road. The vehicle landed on its side, requiring emergency crews to make several attempts with the Jaws-of-Life to extract the two victims.

"Some of the trees needed to be cut to reach the victims," Chief Lloyd said.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Tiverton police are currently in the process of notifying the victim's family.

A second victim was airlifted to the Rhode Island Hospital Trauma Center for treatment of serious injuries. His medical condition is unknown at this time.

Emergency crews worked late into the early hours at the scene. Assisting Tiverton firefighters were personnel from the Portsmouth, Middletown and Fall River, MA, fire departments.

Tiverton Auto Body also responded to help remove the vehicle.
