Police: Couple Arrested After Allegedly Roughing Up Beach House Doorman

Couple Arrested Following Beach House Argument

A husband and wife were arrested early Sunday after the wife allegedly kicked a bar doorman in the groin. Police were called to bar on Park Avenue at 1 a.m. to help remove an intoxicated patron.

John Manchester, 44, of 36 Allan Ave., Portsmouth, allegedly became argumentative with bar staff when he was asked to leave, police said.

"He began to fight with the doorman," said Lt. Brian Peters. "The fight became physical."

After Manchester allegedly ripped the doorman's shirt, his wife reportedly joined the fight. Angela Manchester, 39, allegedly kicked the doorman in the groin and struck him with her hands.

"He appeared to have small cuts on his head and neck," Lt. Peters said.

Both husband and wife were taken into custody. John Manchester was charged with disorderly conduct. His wife, Angela, was charged with simple assault. 

Scampi's Employee Allegedly Swears at Officer

Anthony DeMarco, 61, of 548 Park Ave., was arrested outside around 1:50 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21. An officer on patrol noticed several patrons apparently consuming alcohol inside the bar, according to police. The bar should have been closed at this time, police said. The officer entered the bar and asked the patrons to leave. DeMarco, an employee of Scampi's (although, it is unclear if he was working at the time), allegedly began to swear at the officer.

"He was being uncooperative," Lt. Peters said.

DeMarco allegedly left the bar, but allegedly swore and yelled again outside. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. The restaurant could be cited for serving alcohol after hours. This citation is pending, police said. 

Other Arrests

  • , 33, of 36 Narragansett Boulevard, was arrested at 11:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20. McCollum was wanted on an affidavit arrest warrant, issued by the Tiverton Police Department, for allegedly violating a no-contact order. Portsmouth police arrested McCollum at his house and later turned him over to the custody of Tiverton police.  
  • , 26, of 1535 Wapping Road, Middletown, was arrested at 1:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, after a motor vehicle stop on East Main Road near Union Street. Police said they detected a strong aroma of alcohol coming from the vehicle. Fougere apparently failed a field sobriety test and, after being transported to the police station, failed a chemical test. He was charged with driving under the influence.
