Police Log: Man Tries to Outrun Officers on Golf Course

Jason Derobbio, 29, of Bristol, was arrested on Saturday, April 30, after allegedly crashing his vehicle and leading police on a foot chase through the Montaup Country Club golf course.

Jason Derobbio, 29, of Bristol, was arrested on Saturday, April 30, at 8 p.m. after allegedly crashing his vehicle and leading police on a foot chase through the golf course.

An officer, operating a cruiser on Boyd's Lane, observed a vehicle apparently drive through a stop sign at 8 p.m. at the intersection of Anthony Road and Boyd's Lane. The vehicle was traveling south on Anthony Road at the time.

The vehicle, operated by Derobbio, drove into the Mello's farm stand parking lot, where the vehicle remained. The officer activated the cruiser's lights and drove into the parking lot.

The officer then exited his vehicle, police said. The vehicle operated by Derobbio, a 1996 Ford Taurus, apparently then drove around the officer and continued down on Anthony Road.

The Taurus didn't get far before crashing into a fence on Anthony Road, just after the state highway garage.

Officers attempted to arrest Derobbio, who exited his vehicle after the crash. Police say he resisted, pulling away from an officer with one handcuff on his write.

Derobbio fled on foot through the Montaup Country Club golf course, police said. Officers followed and later apprehended the suspect on the northern end of the course.

Derobbio was transported to Newport Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He also refused to submit to a chemical test at this time, police said.

He was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, eluding police and resisting arrest, driving on a suspended license and refusal to submit to a chemical test.
