Police Log: Man Allegedly Slaps Woman, Tries to Punch Officer

Portsmouth man arrested after allegedly trying to punch officer

A Portsmouth man ended up in handcuffs early Thursday morning after police were called to break up a fight at his Thurston Avenue home.

Police were called to the home of 21-year-old at 12:45 a.m. Thursday. A fight was apparently in progress at 39 Thurston Ave. 

Before officers arrived, Williams had allegedly slapped a 19-year-old Newport woman in the face.

A 20-year-old Portsmouth man, also at the residence, attempted to restrain Williams. The two began to fight, police said, with Williams then assaulting the 20-year-old. 

A third man then entered the melee. A 45-year-old Portsmouth man attempted to break up the fight, but was allegedly struck by Williams during the process. 

Officers arrived at the house and attempted to place Williams in handcuffs. "Williams pulled away and pushed an officer," said Lt. Brian Peters. 

Williams then allegedly attempted to punch on officer, according to Peters. However, Williams reportedly swung and missed. 

He was then placed into handcuffs and transported to the police station, where he was held overnight. Police also say they discovered a single Amphetamine pill in the suspect's pocket. 

Williams was charged with the following: possession of a controlled substance, Amphetamine; three counts, domestic, simple assault; one count, simple assault; and resisting arrest. 

He is expected to be arraigned in court this morning. 

Nothing ever good happens after 2 a.m.

Officers checking on a parked vehicle in the roadway at 2 a.m. led to the arrest of a Portsmouth woman on Tuesday. 

Police received a phone call about a suspicious vehicle parked on Evergreen Drive at Middle Road at 2 a.m. When officers arrived, they saw two occupants in the vehicle and detected a strong aroma of marijuana, police said. 

Police arrested the vehicle's operator, 20-year-old Kerry Ryan of 41 Kaitlin Place. 

Officers discovered a small glass jar in Ryan's purse. The glas jar contained marijuana, police said. 

She was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. She was later released with a court summons. 

Bristol woman arrested on warrant

Ellyn Hayden, 33, of Bristol, was arrested after a minor motor vehicle accident on East Main Road at Sherwood Drive on Tuesday at 5 p.m. 

A check revealed Hayden, the operator of one of the vehicles, was wanted on two bench warrants from Second District Court. 

Newport man arrested on warrant

Shayne Costa, 22, of Newport, was arrested after a motor vehicle stop Monday at 6:30 p.m. on Boyd's Lane. 

The vehicle was stopped for an apparent equipment violation — malfunctioning brake light. A check revealed the driver, Costa, was wanted on a Second District Court warrant. 

Costa was arrested and later arraigned before a justice of the peace.
