Police Log: Crack, Pills, Fraud, Favorite Sunglasses Stolen

The following arrest and incident information was reported by Portsmouth Police. They do not indicate a conviction.

LARCENY FROM CAR

A recent alert by Portsmouth Police on Facebook for residents to be careful after a rash of thefts from cars parked overnight resulted in a Belmont Drive woman discovering her family was a victim as well.

The resident reported the thefts on May 5 after she read the Facebook post and discovered four pairs of sunglasses, including a prescription pair, and a battery device still in an unopened box were stolen from her car recently.

The resident wrote that the car was parked in the driveway and left there for about a week. The car is normally in the garage, she said, but she had taken it out to make room in the garage.

One pair of sunglasses was worth $500, she said, and her husband’s glasses that were stolen were his favorite. He had purchased them with winnings from a golf tournament.

FRAUD
A 21-year-old Tiverton man wanted in connection with using stolen credit cards was charged by Portsmouth Police with fraud on May 12.

Police said Ronald Louis Kennedy, of 917 Old Stafford Road attempted to use a stolen credit card to buy $234.72 worth of cigarettes from the East Main Road Cumberland Farms on Feb. 7. The transaction was declined because the victim had already reported it stolen.

Bristol Police identified Kennedy as a suspect after they began their investigation into the stolen credit card report by a resident in their town.

Kennedy was picked up on a warrant for the charges on May 12 out of Tiverton and during questioning by Portsmouth Police, he reportedly admitted to using the card.

He also told police that he was given the card by another man who was with him at the time of the attempted purchase and they also made purchases at a Shell gas station in Middletown, a pack of cigarettes at the same Shell and an attempted purchase of an Xbox at the Newport Walmart where it was declined.

Kennedy told police the card was found in an ATM in Bristol and “he knew he was not supposed to be using the card to make purchases,” a police report stated.

Portsmouth Police contacted Newport and Middletown police to inform them of Kennedy’s statement in the event further charges are forthcoming.

Kennedy was released on personal recognizance and is due to appear in court on May 12.

A short time later, the same officer saw the same car in the center median on Old West Main Road without a turn signal.

Once stopped, police said they saw a bag of marijuana inside of a can tucked next to Rocheleau’s leg against the driver’s side door.

When asked if there were any drugs in the car, Rocheleau handed police the marijuana and a cigarette box with suboxone pills inside.

Rocheleau told police he became addicted to pain pills after getting his wisdom teeth removed and had started taking suboxone to help deal with the withdrawal symptoms as he tried to get clean.
