UPDATE: Missing Teen Left With Mysterious Man, Without Cell Phone

Portsmouth police give new details into the investigation of a missing teen at a press conference held late Wednesday afternoon at Town Hall.

A Portsmouth teen disappeared from home Wednesday in less than 30 minutes.

The mother of 13-year-old Kathryn Botelho left around 9 a.m. Wednesday and returned a half hour later to find her daughter missing from her Ferry Circle Landing residence, a private, quiet place off Bristol Ferry Road near the Mount Hope Bridge.

Her mother contacted police at 9:35 a.m. Her daughter, a blonde, blue-eyed teen, was last seen around 9 a.m. home alone.

Her mother is a teacher at Tiverton High School. Kathryn has a brother, age 15.

Police searched the area and knocked on neighbors' doors, but could not find the Portsmouth teen. Officers, however, spoke with a landscaper who saw Kathryn leave the home with a mysterious man wearing a purple shirt.

"According to the witness, the young female was seen leaving the area with the male in an older model red Chrysler Concord or Sebring with faded paint and possibly NJ registration," said Interim Chief of Police Jeffrey Furtado.

"According to the witness, it appeared to be a voluntarily departure," Furtado added during a press conference Wednesday at 4 p.m.

"She has not been seen or heard from since about 9 a.m. this morning."

Kathryn also left without a cell phone, but with an iPod and some clothing, according to the interim police chief.

Portsmouth police issued a CodeRed and Amber Alert.

They contacted the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority to view traffic cameras. They are also checking any possible online activity.

The State Police is assisting in the investigation.

Kathryn Botelho is described by police as a 13-year-old white female, approximately 4’11”, 110 lbs., with blonde hair and blue eyes.

The suspect, man she left with, is described as a white man, approximately 5’9’, thin build, unshaven, approximately 40 to 45 years of age.

Anyone with information concerning this case is urged to contact the Portsmouth police at 683-0300.
