Middletown Police: Man Arrested on Felony Child Abuse Charge

The following information is based on Middletown Police Department reports. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A Middletown man was arrested Monday on a second-degree felony child abuse charge after he allegedly assaulted the disabled daughter of his girlfriend.

Kyle Schwartz, 21, of 1659 West Main Road, Middletown, was arrested around 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 19.

were first alerted to the alleged abuse in January, when someone reported discovering two bruises on the child's right cheek.  responded, along with Portsmouth Police and the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF).  

Police reported that because of the girl’s mental disability, she struggled to speak and explain the story, but told police that "Kyle" punched her in the face because he was mad at her for going to the bathroom in her pants.

The man was later identified by police as Kyle Schwartz, her mother’s boyfriend. 

Police reportedly called the girl’s mother and asked her to meet with police. The mother allegedly stated that she had noticed the bruises, but did not know anything about Schwartz hitting her daughter. She reportedly told police Schwartz resides at her house and is the primary caretaker of her four children. 

A warrant was issued for Schartz’s arrest that day.

On Monday, March 19, police responded to a West Main Road home and met with DCYF, who received a call that morning reporting that a young girl had allegedly assaulted by Schwartz. 

Police and DCYF responded to Schwartz's residence at 1659 West Main Road to obtain custody of the children and arrest him.

Schwartz was found by police crouched down in a closet with clothing covering his body. He was ordered out of the closet and placed under arrest. DCYF took custody of the four children at the home.
