And Portsmouth Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the crash, which happened around 11:30 p.m., to contact their detectives at 401-683-0944.

Police said they charged 57-year-old Jeffrey Gomez, of 68 Perrault St., Portsmouth, with felony driving to endanger, driving under the influence and refusing a chemical test after the crash that resulted in both drivers involved being sent to the hospital.

Police said the preliminary investigation showed that Gomez was driving his 2001 Chevy pickup north on West Main Road when he crossed the double yellow lines, causing the head on collision with a 43-year-old Fall River, Mass.-man who was driving the other car.

Both men were transported to Newport Hospital and later, to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment for their injuries, which police did not specify.

In a release, Det. Lt. A.J. Bucci said the investigation concluded that Gomez was drunk when the crash happened.

Gomez was issued a District Court summons at the hospital to appear in court to face the charges on March 6. He will be arraigned in Newport District Court.
