Man Killed in Bellevue Accident was a Salve Professor

According to a letter sent out from the Salve Regina University President, the driver was a university professor.

The 55-year-old Newport man this morning was a professor, according to an email from President Sister Jane Gerety to the university community. 

The e-mail, RE: "Prayer Request for Dr. Peter Liotta" reads: 

It saddens me to inform you of the passing of Dr. Peter Liotta, who was killed in a car accident early this morning. Dr. Liotta was beloved by his students, respected among colleagues and renowned internationally for his prolific writing and expertise on world issues. During Dr. Liotta’s tenure as executive director of Salve Regina’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, he produced high caliber programs that were both timely in nature and relevant. His leadership connected the University with many national and international institutions and organizations.

The Office of Academic Affairs is working to make sure those students enrolled in Dr. Liotta’s classes this semester are able to fulfill their academic requirements. Students affected will be contacted. Any students wishing to speak with a counselor may contact University Counseling Services at extension 2919.  Faculty and staff seeking assistance may contact the Office of Human Resources at ext. 2137. Mercy Center staff are also available to all members of the University community.

Liotta is listed as a Political Science and Humanities professor, according to the Salve Regina University website. 

Newport police were not able to confirm the identity of the driver.
