UPDATED: Elderly Woman, 80, Dies After Car Strikes Pole

An elderly woman died Wednesday following a serious car crash on Bristol Ferry Road in Portsmouth.

The following story was updated at 4 p.m. Wednesday. 

An 80-year-old woman died Wednesday after sustaining injuries in a single car crash on Bristol Ferry Road, confirmed a spokeswoman for Newport Hospital late this afternoon. 

The woman, whose identity is not being released at this time, was transported to Newport Hospital after a single-car crash on Bristol Ferry Road in Portsmouth just before noon on Wednesday. 

The Portsmouth Fire Department received several 911 calls starting at 11:49 a.m., reporting a car crash in the area of 283 Bristol Ferry Road. 

The car reportedly struck a telephone pole. 

Emergency crews arrived to find a single car with a woman nearby the vehicle.

The victim had been extricated from the vehicle, according to the Portsmouth Fire Department. She was receiving care from bystanders at the time.  

Portsmouth EMT's began treatment and transported the woman to Newport Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Portsmouth Police Department. National Grid responded to the scene to repair the telephone pole. 

A section of Bristol Ferry Road was temporarily closed to traffic Wednesday. Vehicles were detoured around the crash scene.
