Bristol Man Leads Police on High Speed Chase into Portsmouth with Stolen Truck

Suspect strikes three police officers, bites another officer's hand during arrest.

A Bristol man is under arrest after leading police on a high-speed chase in Portsmouth early Tuesday morning ending in a crash according to the Sakonnet Times.

Twenty-three year Cesar Smith of Burke Road in Bristol lead police on the chase after allegedly stealing a pickup truck from a Woodlawn Avenue residence in Bristol just after midnight Tuesday. During the chase Burke hit a Jersey barrier before crossing over the Mount Hope Bridge.

According to the Sakonnet Times, the chase ended after Smith lost control of the truck after trying to make a right hand turn onto East Main Road from Bristol Ferry Road in Portsmouth, striking an occupied car then coming to rest near Clements market.

The Sakonnet Times reports that police said Smith put up a struggle during the arrest , striking three officers and biting an officer’s hand before he was restrained. The driver in the car that Smith struck was not injured.
