Bristol Ferry Road Lane Change

I am appalled reading that the section of Bristol Ferry Road between Turnpike and Mt. Hope Bridge is being considered for one lane traffic with a left turn only lane. The relative number of accidents on this road cannot be proportionally worse than many other roads in Portsmouth. Citing recent vehicle fatalities in 2013 is melodramatic, considering both drivers had medical issues and/or intoxication that precipitated the crash. It wasn't the road! I anticipate the backlog of traffic created by this lane change would most likely make it nearly impossible for drivers trying to enter BF Rd. from their driveways.
Of particular concern is the volume of traffic heading north, particularly between the hours of 4 - 6 PM. Bristol Ferry Road is nearly always congested in both lanes, and even more so during the summer months. There have been numerous occasions I have had to wait in excess of 15 minutes to get from Turnpike to the bridge (app. 1 mile) with two lanes, even when there weren't lane closures on the Mt. Hope bridge.  At least now, I am able to get to the portion of Bristol Ferry Road north of the bridge from the right lane; however, the proposed change eliminating that lane will force every car traveling to Ferry Landing, Pocasset Heights, Bayview Ave., and BF Rd., (app. 200 homes) as well as those heading to Island Park, Common Fence Point, and Rt. 24N) to wait in a single lane with Mt. Hope bridge traffic. Living on an island with only three bridges to exit the island needs special consideration in traffic study. On a daily basis this change would be torturous, but in the event of emergency egress from the Island, it would be a catastrophe. The Portsmouth Council is correct in questioning the validity of this change, and I trust they will do everything in their power to require the need be validated (if it can, which I doubt) before creating such a traffic nightmare.
