Obituary: Robert F. McManus, 77, Korean War Vet, VFW Post Commander

Robert F. “Twig” McManus, 77, of Portsmouth, died Saturday, March 8, 2014, at home surrounded by his family.

He was the husband of Carol (Boiani) McManus for 50 years.

Born on April 25, 1936 in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Edward and Mary (Rosa) McManus.

Mr. McManus graduated from De La Salle Academy and Providence College. He served in the Marines during the Korean War. Mr. McManus began a long civil service career working for the Federal Highway Division and finally with HUD (Housing and Urban Development) for 38 years as a real estate appraiser. He enjoyed golf, attending his children’s sporting events and was an avid Red Sox fan. Twig particularly enjoyed spending time at Sandy Point Beach, so much so, the local neighborhood gang nicknamed him the “Senior Lifeguard”. Mr. McManus was a former Post Commander at the VFW in Middletown and also a member of the Elks Lodge in Newport.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Allison McManus of Woonsocket, RI, Edward McManus and Robert McManus both of Portsmouth, RI, his siblings, Elizabeth Bric, Alan Hinds and Carol Nugent, his grandchildren Mariah and Mariana, several nieces and nephews and his best pal, his Pomeranian, Jet Black.

He was the father of the late Veronica McManus and brother of the late Edward McManus.

His services will be private.
