Obituary: Clara V. Douglas, 92

Clara passed on Monday, February 3, 2014 at Village House, Harrison Avenue, Newport, R. I. She was a long time resident of Portsmouth, formerly of Newport. 

Born on Block Island, April 18, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Harry R. and Amy L. (Netson) Douglas. She was the last surviving of their four children. She was the sister of Elizabeth A. Douglas, Ruth S. Sebastian, and Robert H. Douglas. She is survived by her four nieces; Diana S. Douglas, Linda C. Landel, Phyllis T. Douglas and Robin M. Brown and three nephews: Earle Y. DeGraphenried, Howard R. Sebastian, Earnest Sebastian. 

Clara was communicant of St. John’s Church of Newport. Middletown became her home in the early 1940s when she came to work as a maid for Mrs. Foote of the Bridge House, Paradise Ave. Later she worked as housekeeper for several Newport business men’s’ families. In 1969 she went to be employed at Raytheon as a Technician until she retired in 1997.

She loved to travel with her sister Elizabeth. They traveled from Virginia to California and to the Canadian Eastern Provinces. After her sister’s death she continued her travels with friends, including a trip to Europe with a close neighbor, Beverly Dutra. 

Clara was an avid gardener, loved nature, cats and also was an amateur artist. She loved and cared for her family. She will be greatly missed.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 4-6 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. 

Her funeral service will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 9:30 am in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Clara’s memory may be made to the Norman Bird Sanctuary, 583 Third Beach Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
