Obituary: Catherine Ann Martens, 86, Worked at Newport Hospital

Catherine Ann (Russo) Martens, 86, of Portsmouth, died peacefully Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at home. 

Catherine was born in Salerno, Italy and came to America where she became the wife of the late Charles F. Martens, Jr. During Kay’s early years she was a dedicated stay-at-home mother and worked nights at local retail stores. Later in life Kay worked in the Billing Office at the Newport Hospital and after retiring she remained very active as a volunteer. She was the Member of the Board and Treasurer of the Auxiliary also giving her time in the Hosptials Gift Shop, Information Desk, Knitting hats & booties for newborns, and Admin work for the Billing Office. For all of her dedicated services to the hospital Kay was recognized Volunteer of the Year in 2001.

She is survived by her son Gary Martens, her daughters Diane Anderson and Marion Baird of Portsmouth, RI, her sister Marie Turli of Florida, her brother Mario Cammarano and her sister Alma Carbone of New Jersey, fourteen grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

She was the mother of the late Charles (Chuck) F. Martens III, and sister of the late Sam and Vincent Cammarano. 

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2014, from 2:00 - 5:00 pm at the Connors Funeral Home: 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, May 5, 2014, at 9:00 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Burial will be at the Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
