Obituary: Andrew D. Pechkam, 27, Scholar, Sports Fan, Inspired Others

Andrew Dooley Peckham, 27, of Portsmouth, RI, died in the arms of his parents and PICU nurses, Roshine and Eileen, on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA. Born in Newport, RI, on May 17, 1986, he was the son of Dwayne and Patricia (Hurley) Peckham.

Andrew was a 2004 graduate of Portsmouth High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, the RI Honor Society and the PHS Wall of Fame. He received his BA in American History from Salve Regina University in 2009, having twice received the Peter Rector Scholarship. Andrew was also appointed as an honorary Portsmouth Firefighter in 2001.

Andrew was a true citizen of life. His caring and loving spirit touched everyone he met. He appreciated everyone for who they were, never judging a book by its cover. He always brought the best out in people and helped everyone understand the true value of helping one another.

He was an avid New England sports fan and had a passion for many things including – the Food Network, the History Channel, Jeopardy, movies, classic rock music, and held a particular fascination with the National Parks Service.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his brother, Connor A. Peckham of Portsmouth, his paternal grandparents, Diane and Ralph Peckham of Portsmouth, his aunt, Melinda Viera of RI, his uncle, John Hurley of CO, and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Edward and Arlene Hurley, as well as his aunt, Susan Hurley.

A beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Visiting hours will be held at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, on Monday, April 21, 2014, from 4:00-7:00 p.m.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd, at 12:00p.m., in the St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. His burial will follow in the Newport Memorial Park in Middletown, RI.
