Calling Hours for 'Mr. Fitz' To Be Held Tuesday

Col. Edward Francis Fitzgerald of Portsmouth died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at home.

Calling hours for the late Col. Edward Francis Fitzgerald are expected to take place Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.

His Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Columba’s Catholic Cemetery, Middletown. 

As of Monday afternoon, there has been no announcement of cancellation for Tuesday's calling hours due to snow conditions. Please continue to check with Patch for any possible cancellation or postponement. 

Col. Fitzgerald served his country in the United States Marine Corps for 31 years, and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a decorated infantry and military officer and held numerous command and staff positions. 

In 1990, Mr. Fitzgerald began a second career as a substitute teacher at Portsmouth High School, where he taught for 20 years. “Mr. Fitz” was a committed and enthusiastic teacher well known among the students for his energy and genuine caring.
