RIDOT Hearings For Proposed Sakonnet River Bridge Tolls

We need to stand together to stop the proposed Sakonnet Bridge toll

The time to speak out is now!

Next month at the Portsmouth High School at 7 p.m. on Dec. 3rd and again  at the Tiverton High School at 7 p.m. on Dec 4th, the state Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will be holding a hearing on the proposed toll for the Sakonnet River Bridge .

RIDOT will listen to and accept written testimony from residents of Newport County, Bristol County and Massachusetts. These letters and testimony will be forwarded to the Federal Highway Administration (FHA for consideration in their deliberations. The FHA. has the final say on tolls for the bridge.

The FHA is looking for testimony with concerns for the social, economic, and environmental impact in rearguards to the placement of this toll.

We need thousands of letters from citizens, businesses, and elected officials telling them how this toll will adversely effect lives.  We have a chance to block this at the  federal level if thousands respond.

Prepare a letter describing how the toll will effect your business, social activities, volunteerism, or any other part of your life. I heard from a woman who travels from Portsmouth to Tiverton for kidney dialysis several times a week. There are stories of  veterans who travel to the Hospital for care. We need letters, and lots of them. The fact is the legislature could care less about us on this side of the state.

We are a tax base for the cities up north who get our tax dollars to pay for their schools, police and fire departments. They want more from us every year. The only real chance we have to beat this is at the federal level.

If we don't respond with thousands of letters and a strong showing at both hearings we will be paying that toll for the rest of time. Get informed and involved now. Groups like STOP and DONTTOLL.com  are working to stop this toll from being placed on the Sakonnet River Bridge. Take the time and put pen to paper today. We have to be strong to beat back the oppressive tax the legislature is trying to impose on the people in the East Bay.

FIGHT! Get those letters to the hearing, mail them to me or call  me at 401-662-5748 and I will pick it up from your home.

Help out and help your self.

Thank you for getting this out there, Joe. I was not aware of these hearings until reading this. Every single person who is against this toll should write a letter against it, and if physically able, attend the meeting. Joe is correct that the Federal Highway Administration is our only chance to block this toll. Ask every person you know to write a letter. Between Portsmouth, Tiverton, Little Compton, and surrounding communities our letters should be in the thousands. This is our only hope. If you are against this toll, you can do something about it! If the tolls get enacted and you didn't do anything, you have only yourself to blame.
