Get Out! Enjoy Top Comedians, Famous Horses and Artistic Elephants

Enjoy living on Narrangansett Bay this week, with seaside events in Newport, the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions at Colt State Park, or games and food at the Columban Fathers.

The Newport Folk Festival is sold out, but there's still beautiful music to be found around Portsmouth this weekend - as well as comedy, a seaside festival, majestic white horses and paintings by elephants. Yes, you read that right, paintings by elephants.

Here's just a few of the things happening this weekend in and around Portsmouth:

  • Jazz at Greenvale Vineyards
    When
    /Where: Saturday, July 30 at 1 p.m.
    Why Go
    : Cooler weather, great jazz, wine. What more could you ask for on a Saturday afternoon in summer?
    Pricing
    : $15 for jazz and wines.
  • Paintings by Elephants
    When/Where
    : Exhibit opens July 29 (opening reception 3-6 p.m.) at Gallery 4, Tiverton Four Corners, open Monday-Saturday 10-5; Sunday, 11-5, through Sept. 5.
    Why Go
    : They really are paintings by elephants! Portions of sales proceeds go to the World Wildlife Fund and Conservation Center.

    : Free to browse.
  • Royal Lipizzaner Stallions
    When/Where
    : Saturday and Sunday, July 30-31, Colt State Park in Bristol, shows each day at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
    Why Go
    : The royal Lipizzaner Stallions are a world-renowned attraction, performing "Airs Above the Ground."

  • Columban Fathers Bazaar & Festival
    When/Where
    : Sunday, July 31, noon to 6 p.m., Columban Fathers, 65 Ferry Road, Bristol.
    Why Go
    : An annual summer tradition- games, food, activities in a beautiful setting.
    Pricing
    : Free admission, free parking.
  • Comedy in Newport
    When/Where
    : Newport Yachting Center, Newport, Lisa Lampanelli on Saturday, July 30; Brian Regan on Sunday, July 31. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. for each show. Show itself begins at 7:30 p.m.
    Why Go
    : Two chances to have great laughs in one weekend!
    Pricing: Seats for Brian Regan are $45 and $39; this is an all-ages show. For Lisa Lampanelli, tickets are $45.50 and the recommended age is 16+.
  • The Doobie Brothers
    When/Where
    : Friday, July 29, Newport Yachting Center.
    Why Go
    : A legendary band takes the stage as part of the Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series in Newport.
    Pricing
    : $55 standard; $75 preferred.
