Why We Should All Wear Purple Next Week

Project Purple, a National anti-substance abuse awareness campaign, starts in Portsmouth and nationwide on the week of 27 January. The Portsmouth Prevention Coalition, partnering with the Chris Herren project, will launch the Purple Project in Portsmouth to encourage people of all ages, especially students, to take a stand against drug and alcohol abuse. The Purple Project is an integral part of an overall strategy crafted by the Portsmouth Prevention Coalition, chaired by Portsmouth resident Marianne Raymos. Marianne, Coalition Director Ray Davis and Herren Project Program Director Jenny Swider, were our guests on the latest edition of Portsmouth this Week. Ray discussed last year's survey of Portsmouth students, which showed a relatively high and growing level substance abuse among our local students, which appears to be partly the result of a lack of understanding about long term dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Project Purple is one program designed to provide students with the facts to make informed decisions and to assist and provide support to individuals and families who are struggling with addiction.
