Jim Garman Named Official Portsmouth Town Historian

Introducing Portsmouth's Official Town Historian, Jim Garman

Local historian Jim Garman was named as Portsmouth's Official Town Historian in a brief ceremony at the Town Council meeting on Monday night. In Council President Jim Seveney's absence. Vice President John Blaise read the proclamation appointing Garman to this honorary post, which states that ...

"WHEREAS:   As we celebrate our 375th year as a Town, local historian James “Jim” Garman has been a key component of the 375th Celebration Steering Committee.  Jim has advised them on historical matters and has provided a series of public lectures illuminating the history of our Town, and

WHEREAS:   Mr. Garman, as a Town resident, has supported
the study of Portsmouth history for over 30 years.   He has taught and written several books on the history of Portsmouth and related topics and he is an acknowledged expert on the history of Portsmouth and Aquidneck Island, and

WHEREAS:   Mr. Garman has been an avid collector of all documents, photographs and other artifacts relating to Portsmouth history, and in recognition of his many contributions to preserving our history and heritage for future generations it is considered appropriate and fitting that Jim Garman be designated as the Town of Portsmouth’s Official Town Historian.   In this ceremonial volunteer position as Town Historian Mr. Garman will continue to advise the Town, its officials and committees on historic matters with his expertise.

THEREFORE, I, James A. Seveney, President of the Portsmouth Town Council,
propose that this Town Council formally designate JAMES GARMAN as PORTSMOUTH’S TOWN HISTORIAN. ADOPTED:  March 25, 2013."
