Crime, Home Security Discussed on 'Portsmouth This Week'

My special guest on the latest edition of Portsmouth this Week was Portsmouth Police Detective Scott Travers discussing crime in Portsmouth and how you can better protect yourself from would-be thieves. While most of us think of Portsmouth as a fairly safe community, thefts from residences and cars have been on the increase in town. There are many things that we all can do to better protect our homes and vehicles and many of these were addressed by Detective Travers. Small things, like locking your cars, even in your driveway, and locking your doors at home can be effective deterrents against crime. And if you do have any property stolen, having good records, to include photos of the items stolen and serial numbers of high value items like cameras, laptops and TVs, can help police return  them to you is they succeed in catching the thieves.

The most important thing to remember is to call the police as soon as possible after such a loss occurs with any information that you can provide them. You should also call the police if you notice something strange or suspicious going on in your neighborhood. And never confront someone, said Travers. Instead call the police and let them handle the situation. In a real emergency, call 911. When in doubt about whether something is suspicious or not, call the police anyway and rely on their judgement.
