Costs Go Up, Learn to Live With It

Why the town council should pass the school department budget.

I'd like to respectfully request that the Town Council stop grandstanding and pass the proposed school budget.

Costs of just about everything have gone up. The price we pay for heating oil, food, gasoline and most services can be expected to continue to rise - and we have to learn to live with it. I think Cynthia Perotti and the School Board have done as much as they can to craft a bare-bones budget. This is the education of our kids we are talking about and by all measures I've seen, our teachers are doing a good job of it.

One of the reasons I moved here 27 years ago was the quality of the schools. I agree that public unions have to learn to be more responsive to public concerns and realize that they are part of the reason for our town's financial distress. But education is one service that we cannot afford to play political games with. Please accept the small increase and pass the budget. Then we can get on to other things, like trash removal, the town Web site and possibly even watewater treatment systems (aka sewers). :)
