What if Menopause is a Celebration Rather Than A Curse?

In reading, “The Wisdom of Menopause: Creating Physical and Emotional Health During the Change,” I was inspired to see a different side to premenopausal and menopause than the traditional fear around it that culture and experience of others had taught me.  Dr. Christiane Northrop, the author and a holistic practicing gynecologist for many years paints a picture of an opportunity for growth, transformation and allowing the truth of creativity to shine forth.

It is a time where you have the choice to continue to make everyone else in your life important, continuing to deny your own needs, and cry for individuality and creativity or to be brave enough to do the inner healing and exploration that will set you free. The bravery comes in because relationships will be upset, your life may be shaken up a bit, yet in the end you experience a part of yourself that has been patiently waiting for your attention.  This is absolutely liberating and terrifying at the same time.

However to me the alternative of ignoring this creative spirit that needs rekindling and an outlet is more terrifying.  For if you bottle up this energy, this information, this absolute inner desire, heart disease, depression and breast cancer may become your reality.  When I see it this way, there is no choice or rather; there is only one choice.  Choose in favor of you and your expansion.

Yes, it is true that with this change in life many unpleasant physical symptoms show up – irritability, hot flashes, mood swings, bone loss, relationship crises, vocational change, middle of the night wake up calls to name a few.  However, what I am discovering in my research and with my own experience is that when you give attention to the unresolved relationship problems that are deeply settled in, and when you allow yourself to grieve the loss of what is happening, how your dreams are shifting or never took shape, that these symptoms resolve.

This is actually a time where a light is shining on the inner conflicts and hidden resentments that have accumulated throughout your lifetime of sacrifice, and choosing the needs of family, husbands, and parents. It is your inner wisdom beckoning you to pay attention and acknowledge the unresolved, unexpressed and repressed feelings of a lifetime.  When you do this, your body responds with gratitude in the way of calm, peace, health and joy.

Sure changes must be made, will transpire.  Yet there is so much freedom and joy on the other side.  So you must be willing to take full responsibility for your role in your life and the choices you have made.  You must be willing to stop being the victim and blaming everyone else and circumstances.  You must also be willing to feel the pain of loss and grieve all that you have lost, given up and are leaving behind as you grow.

If you are willing to do this, you will experience this time of change – premenopausal and menopause in a whole new light.

Thursday, August 15th, I will be at Bella Intimates in Rye, NH for Tappy Hour™ Menopause and Sexuality.  We will tap (EFT) to help facilitate your inner explorations and freedom from the unconscious and emotional issues that are negatively affecting your experience with menopause and/or sexuality, sensuality, and intimacy.

To register for this class, call 603-918-8265 or  join us Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm at Bella Intimates 150 Lafayette Road, Rye, NH for an evening of tapping away the frustrations of this time of change. Light refreshments will be served.  Of the $25 cost of the workshop, 20% of the proceeds will be donated to http://mybreastcancersupport.org.
