FRIDAY UPDATE: Here's the latest forecast for Friday and the weekend: 

Snow Winding Down; Deep Freeze Setting In

The first storm of 2014 began falling before midnight on Thursday. During the day on Thursday there will be some accumulation, though much of the snow came Thursday night into Friday before the storm ends by Friday afternoon.

Below is what you need to know about this week's significant winter storm. We will be updating this storm center article throughout the storm, so be sure to check back throughout.

Current Forecasts

How much snow is Portsmouth expected to get Thursday and Friday? Here are the projections as of Thursday at 9 a.m. 

Forecasts agree that most of Rhode Island will get 6-10 inches, with more possible along the coast. WPRI Channel 12 is calling for as much as a foot of snow north of Providence. It's possible the southern part of the state could get a couple inches less, but forecast totals have been trending up.

School Closed


In case you missed it, Portsmouth Public Schools are closed for Thursday and Friday. Students won't return from winter break until Monday.

Other Closings 

The Portsmouth Transfer Station will be closed Friday due to storm; station will reopen Saturday at 7:30 a.m.

Portsmouth Town Hall is closed Friday.

Prudence Island Ferry - Limited Service for Friday: 

6:00 AM Ferry - Cancelled
8:00 AM Ferry - Cancelled
3:30 PM Ferry - Scheduled to run

Snow Emergency Declared Goes Into Effect

If you normally park your vehicle on the street, you're going to need to make alternative plans on Thursday and Friday.

The Portsmouth Police Department has issued a parking ban until Friday at 8 p.m.
