RI Under Storm Warning as Snow Continues to Fall

Eastern Massachusetts will feel the bulk of the blizzard, but most Rhode Islanders can expect close to a foot.

Most of Rhode Island will miss the bulk of the storm that is drifting further east, but significant snow and strong wind gusts are still expected throughout the night into Friday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of Rhode Island, which most forecasts estimate will see 6-10 inches by noon Friday. Eastern Massachusetts is expecting a much more serious storm. A blizzard warning has been issued for Cape Cod and Plymouth County, MA, where as much as 15 inches is expected to go with 50 mph winds, creating whiteout conditions and large snow drifts.

Light snow is underway across Rhode Island and should continue into the evening, when the storm will intensify. After getting 1-3 inches through the day, most Rhode Islanders can expect another 5-9 inches overnight. East Bay areas closer to the storm's center could see a bit more accumulation and higher winds.

Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing throughout the storm, preventing any mix of rain and boosting snowfall totals. Temperatures will top out at 28 today and drop steadily through the night. Highs will be in the teens Friday, with a wind chill plummeting to -10.
